I te Au o te Awa

Part of E Awa Te Ara at Te Kōputu a Te Whanga a Toi, Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre. May-October 2026

I te Au o te Awa is an installation that brings together history, landscape, and personal adornment. Jewellery is arranged across a map of the Whakatāne River, tracing Ngāti Awa narratives that range from significant historical events to personal whānau stories.

Worn close to the body, jewellry carries memory. These small objects mark relationships, milestones, and even passing trending moments; travelling with us through time.

Within I te Au o te Awa, which can be translated as In the Current of the River, jewellery become markers along the river’s course, locating stories within a landscape that has sustained Ngāti Awa for centuries.

The installation centres on the river mouth section of the awa where the artist and her Ngāti Hokopū whānui have lived for generations. Each piece of jewellery corresponds to a particular point along the river, recalling events embedded in both collective history and intimate family lore.
